Personalized Bagpipe Lessons

Learn to Play the Bagpipes or Improve Your Bagpiping Skills

Hello, Future Bagpipe Student!

Let's have some fun!

Your very first lesson is FREE!

Learning to play the bagpipes can be easier than you might think.  To get started, you only need three things: a practice chanter, a tutor book, and a teacher to help you learn!

A practice chanter is a smaller instrument that helps you learn how to play the bagpipes.  It has one plastic reed.  You don't need to buy a set of bagpipes right away.  In fact, you will use your practice chanter for a long time as you practice your finger movements and learn new tunes.  It is an important part of becoming a good piper.

You only need to spend a little time practicing each day to start building your bagpipe skills.

Everyone learns differently, so I work with each student at a pace that is right for them. My goal is to make every lesson fun, interesting, and rewarding.

With patience, determination, and regular practice, both children and adults can learn to play the bagpipes.  We will take the time needed to learn each part properly and build a strong musical foundation.  I don't believe in rushing through lessons just to finish quickly.  If we need extra time to make sure you understand something, a one-hour lesson may sometimes take up to two hours at no extra charge.

Great things happen over time!

Lessons and Instruction

Bagpipe lessons can be scheduled for a day, time, and place that works well for you. During the first year, weekly one-on-one lessons are especially helpful.

Your lessons and practice during the first year will have two main stages:

  1. Fingerwork
  2. Moving to the Bagpipes

During the first stage, you will:

  • Learn the basics of playing the practice chanter.
  • Learn how to use your fingers correctly.
  • Build your basic bagpipe skills.
  • Learn some of the first bagpipe embellishments.
  • Start learning and memorizing your first 3–4 tunes.
  • Build a regular practice routine.

If you come to your lessons regularly and practice every day, you should be ready to start learning the actual bagpipes in about 9–12 months.

When you are ready, I will help you choose and purchase the right practice chanter and a suitable set of bagpipes.

Learning the "Pipes" is an incredible journey.  With patience, practice, and determination, you can learn to play music that you will enjoy for many years to come.  Who knows—you may even become a great piper someday!
